Greubel Forsey Spent Years Perfecting a Watch That Was Already Perfect. Of Course They Did.
The Balancier 3 is the third iteration of a watch that did not need improving. Greubel Forsey improved it anyway. That is kind of their whole thing.

The Relentless Ones
Some brands innovate because the market demands it. Greubel Forsey innovates because they physically cannot stop. The Balancier concept started as an exercise in making the balance wheel -- the beating heart of a mechanical watch -- visible and prominent on the dial. The first version was exceptional. The second was better. The third is borderline obsessive.
And we mean that as the highest possible compliment.
What Is a Balance Wheel and Why Feature It
The balance wheel is a weighted wheel inside a watch that oscillates back and forth, dividing time into equal increments. It is the component that creates the ticking. Every mechanical watch has one, but you almost never see it because it is buried inside the movement.
Greubel Forsey pulled it out, placed it prominently on the dial at an inclined angle, and made it the star of the show. It is like an architect putting the structural beams of a building on the outside -- exposing the function as the aesthetic.
What Changed in Version 3
The balance wheel is now inclined at 50 degrees (up from 35 in earlier versions). This steeper angle provides better visibility and, according to Greubel Forsey, improved chronometric performance in certain positions. The bridge holding the balance wheel has been redesigned with a more organic shape, hand-finished with beveling that catches light like a tiny architectural detail.
The case has been slimmed down. The power reserve increased to 72 hours. The dial layout was refined to give the balance wheel more visual space. Every change is subtle. Collectively, they transform the watch.
The Price of Perfection
A Greubel Forsey starts well into six figures. This is not a brand for most budgets. But understanding what they do helps you appreciate what is possible in mechanical watchmaking, even if you never buy one. It is like understanding what a Michelin three-star restaurant does even if you eat at diners. The knowledge enriches the entire experience.
The CS Take
The Balancier 3 is not a new watch. It is a better version of an already remarkable watch. Greubel Forsey's refusal to accept good enough is what makes them one of the most respected names in independent watchmaking. Iteration is not glamorous. But it is how great things get made.
