After decades of using other brands' movements, Porsche Design made their own. The all-titanium Chronograph 1 is their statement of independence.

From Borrowed to Built
Porsche Design has been making watches since 1972. They designed the first all-black watch ever. They pioneered the use of titanium in wristwatches. But for most of their history, they used movements made by other companies -- IWC, Eterna, and others provided the engines while Porsche Design handled the bodywork.
Not anymore. The Chronograph 1 features their first in-house movement. And it matters.
Why In-House Matters
An in-house movement means the brand designed and built the engine themselves, rather than buying it from a supplier. It is the difference between a car company making their own engine versus dropping in a Chevy V8. Both can work. But one shows a deeper level of commitment and capability.
For Porsche Design, this is existential. They have always been seen as a design company that makes watches, not a watch company. Having their own movement changes that conversation entirely.
The Chronograph 1
The case is 42mm in titanium -- a material Porsche Design has championed since the 1970s. Full titanium case, crown, pushers, and bracelet. It weighs practically nothing for a chronograph this size.
The movement is visible through the caseback, and the architecture is distinctly automotive. Bridges are finished to look like engine components. The column wheel (the part that controls the chronograph functions) is placed prominently and finished in a dark coating that references Porsche Design's black-everything aesthetic.
The dial is flat black with applied indices and white printing. No color. No gradient. No nonsense. It is the watch equivalent of a blacked-out 911. You know exactly what you are looking at.
The Automotive Connection
Porsche Design has always walked a line between watch brand and automotive brand extension. With the Chronograph 1, they are finally credible on both sides. The design is unmistakably Porsche. The mechanics are unmistakably watchmaking. The marriage works.
The CS Take
The Chronograph 1 is the most important watch Porsche Design has ever made. Not because of specs or materials, but because it proves they can build the whole thing. In-house manufacturing is the ultimate flex in watchmaking, and Porsche Design just earned it. Welcome to the club.
